Precaution against Counterfeit Canon Lithium-ion Battery Packs and Chargers

Thank you for using Canon products.

We are aware that there are certain batteries available in the market, which fraudulently display the Canon logo and other trademarks, even though they have not been designed, produced, nor licensed by Canon. Counterfeit versions of Canon lithium-ion battery packs and battery chargers, which are intended to be used with Canon digital cameras and video camcorders, are also in circulation on various internet auction sites.

Danger of using Canon Counterfeits
In many cases, counterfeit batteries and chargers are not equipped with protective devices. When used or charged, these counterfeits can cause abnormal heat generation, leakage, ignition, rupture, and other malfunctions in the products they are used with.

These types of incidents have been investigated by Canon and it has been determined that counterfeit products were the DIRECT cause of the malfunction. In a worst scenario, not only can counterfeit batteries damage cameras and video camcorders, it can potentially cause fire, burns, blindness and other serious accidents and injuries.

For your safety, we strongly recommend the use of genuine Canon battery packs and battery chargers, which are designed with safety in mind. Genuine Canon battery packs and battery chargers are equipped with protective devices to avoid excessive heat, both while the camera is operating and during charging. We urge our customers to recognize, and not to use, counterfeit battery packs and battery chargers.

How to Identify Genuine Canon Battery from a Counterfeit
Canon’s genuine lithium-ion battery packs have a distinctive hologram label on the package (see below), which verifies their authenticity. When purchasing battery packs, please refer to this information. (See the following images for the labels.)

Note: Genuine Canon accessories such as batteries have a security label, which has a hologram that changes in pattern and color depending on the angle from which they are viewed.

In addition, the imprinting of logos and descriptions on counterfeit batteries is often blurry and not distinct, when compared to genuine Canon-brand accessories (see example below).

Please be advised that Canon will not be responsible and liable for any malfunctions, damages or injuries caused by non-Canon genuine lithium-Ion batteries and / or battery chargers, including, without limitation, counterfeit devices. We ask that you take special precautions when purchasing batteries and / or chargers, especially through internet auctions.
